Composite bonding today is a super exciting treatment option for patients. The composite material is the same material that we use for fillings.
What we do with composite bonding is that we carefully place and sculpt filling material over the tooth. This is specialized filling material because it resembles tooth structure very closely.
What’s great is that it has the same process in terms of smile design we use for porcelain veneers, I use for composite bonding. The design is the same, but the material is different. This gives patients the flexibility to choose their material, while having some control over their investment.
Composite is not as premium as porcelain. I do find it can chip and stain, but I have travelled throughout North America, and learned many techniques for the past 10 years so that my composite bonding will closely rival the polish of porcelain and stain a lot less, while making 1/3–1/2 the investment.
This is my favourite procedure. I am able to help so many younger patients, or people in general who have fears of removing any tooth material.
Types of Composite Bonding Treatment
- Full composite veneers – I cover the entire tooth with composite. This gives more flexibility in terms of changing the shape, as well as the color of the tooth.
- Edge bonding – Covers portions of the tooth. This doesn’t give as much control of the color, but allows changes in width and height.
Common Uses
- Closing gaps between teeth (genetic gaps or gaps left after Invisalign/orthodontic treatment).
- Improving the shape and size of teeth.
- Providing a conservative solution compared to porcelain veneers.
